Robyn Eckhardt and David Hagerman grew up in Michigan and met at university, where they bonded over pan-fried jiaozi and hot and sour soup and an interest in Asia. Their first overseas adventure together was in Chengdu, Sichuan province, where they taught English in the mid-1980s and developed a serious and enduring chili addiction. They returned to China in to live and work for five years in the mid-1990s and, after three years back in the States moved to Bangkok in 2002. They've lived in Southeast Asia ever since - after Bangkok in Saigon and now in Kuala Lumpur, which they've called home for more than four years.
After earning Master's degrees in Asian Studies and Political Science and completing dissertation fieldwork in China, Robyn jumped the academic ship in 2004. She now writes on food, travel, culture, and historic preservation for Travel+Leisure and Wall Street Journal Asia and has contributed to Saveur, the Chicago Tribune, Budget Travel, Afar, as well as other publications.
David is a freelance commercial and editorial photographer specializing in food, travel, and portraiture. His work has appeared in Saveur, Wall Street Journal Asia, Travel+Leisure, Budget Travel, the South China Morning Post, Reader's Digest, and Lonely Planet Guides.
The two are on the road about half the year and collaborate whenever possible, most often on street food crawls and their award-winning food blog EatingAsia.
